Transforming an outdoor-access laundry into a cohesive, light-filled extension of the home.
Originally part of a traditional New Zealand villa layout, this space housed the toilet and laundry outside the main home, accessed only via a small covered porch. While typical of early villa design, the arrangement felt disconnected from everyday living and lacked both comfort and functionality.
The brief focused on reimagining this transitional area into a cohesive, practical extension of the home while still respecting the character of the original architecture.
Using detailed 3D visualisations during the design phase allowed the client to clearly understand how the new layout, cabinetry and material palette would work within the existing structure. These early renders helped guide key decisions around storage, flow and finishes, ensuring confidence before construction began.
The new design introduces improved connection with access now off the kitchen/living area along with plenty of storage and a softer, refined palette that enhances light and flow between indoors and outdoors. Warm timber look vinyl flooring grounds the space, while classic white joinery and subtle brass hardware reference the heritage aesthetic in a contemporary way.
The result is a thoughtful transformation that bridges heritage architecture with contemporary living, proving that even the most overlooked spaces can become quietly elevated through careful planning and visualisation.
